Wally the nasty monkey

Our stay in the Sandoval Lake Lodge off Sandoval Lake In the Amazon was quite an experience. We had rain, cloud and a tiny bit of sun ... The lodge was very .... Um ... Rustic ... We only had electricity from 5am-6am, 1pm-4pm and 6pm-10pm ... All other times you have to use your personal torch or head lamp to illuminate the bathroom. Food at the lodge was gourmet quality ... But it was so damp that the clothes never dried for that entire trip.

We did get to see kaymen, Macaw (large and small), brown monkeys a small snake and a tarantula.

Now what about Wally I hear you ask?

Well one morning we were taken to the island on the other side of the lake. As Vigner (our guide) paddled the boat in we could see that we that there was a bunch of fallen tree trunks forming a makeshift dock. With a little help we finally made it onto the island ... And after a few steps, Vigner stops looks into the jungle and says "we have a problem". About 50 yards away, up in the trees was a small black shape staring at us ... It was Wally. Wally is a black spider monkey introduced into the jungle a few years ago. Since then he has returned to his natural instincts which is to be aggressively territorial.

Vigner asked us if we wanted to get back to the boat or try to make a run for it. Run for it? ... Yeah ... I think NOT!!!

So we make it back to the boat ... And as Vigner is paddling away from the shore ... We see a rustling in the trees ... Vigner turns to us and says "he's coming" ... We really didn't believe him until Wally bursts through the trees ... Hanging from a branch that brings him as close to the boat as possible ... Swinging back and forth giving us this dirty stare ... We waited until we were away from the shore before we started to talk crap to the monkey ... Rob stood up and grabbed Vigner's machete ... Whirling it around ... We were all bad asses once we had pulled away from the shore :) ... Yelling at the monkey how he'll never get a date with that attitude, that he's a wimp etc
