Applause for the pilot?

We landed in Buenos Aires twice and each time the passengers burst out with a round of applause for the pilot/landing ... They were just relatively routine landings ... I wonder if the passengers knew something we didn't ... Like normally this pilot misses the runway so this time he did really good .... Ummm yeah thats great ... Gulp :(
