With an early start, our guide Javier brought to the boat that will take us on our day tour. Lake Titikaka is located between Peru And Bolivia ... It's 160km long and 60km wide and is a fresh water lake. Two primary people live here ... The pre-inca tribes and the inca desendents.
The islands of Uros are floating island made from reeds ... Population of around 1000 pre-inca people. Everything is made from reeds ... The ground (which is soft to walk on ... Like a water bed) , the houses, their boats, etc. it was amazing to see how these people live ... We tried on their traditional clothing ... I barely fitted into mine (need to lose a little weight I think) and Maya wanted to know if her dress made her look fat :)
In winter the temps at night can get down to -20C and they were explaining that everything turns to ice. They don't have any form of heating ... They just wear more layers of clothing.
Then we headed off to the island of Taquile ... Climbed a hill to get to the main square where you could the the Andes mountains in Peru and in Bolivia
Javier took us for our lunch (the first natively cooked vegetarian meal we have had since arriving in South America. Started with quinoa soup and an omelette on a bed of rice topped with chips (fries for the US) and some veggies. The pic of Maya eating soup with crazy eyes scared the crap out of me :). The food was really good especially the soup. It was a really great trip ... Thanks Javier!!!
Btw the guy in orange is a french dude with a big ass camera who pushed Maya while clambering to get to the top of the boat ... Causing Maya to touch a hot exhaust pipe. So if any of you see Monsieur Froggy about, please sort him out!!!
